Von 2003 an zog sich Matt Johnson mit seinem Musikprojekt The The weitgehend aus dem Licht der Öffentlichkeit zurück und konzentrierte sich stattdessen auf Soundtrackarbeiten für Filme und Kunstinstallationen. Erst im Juni 2018 trat er wieder mit einer Band auf - der Konzertmitschnitt The Comeback Special fängt die Show vom 5. Juni in der Royal Albert Hall ein, nach einem Konzert in Dänemark einige Tage davor der erste zweite Auftritt dieses Comebacks. Die Setlist, wie Johnson in einem Interview erklärte, balanciert dabei bekannte Songs mit weniger bekannten und konzentriert sich anfangs auf die politischen Songs, während später der Fokus auf den emotionalen und dann auf den metaphysischen Stücken liegt. Zum Live-Album gibt es auch einen Film und ein Buch.
