Leyla zieht an, fesselt. Und sorgt für gute Laune, vor allem mit diesem dritten Album. Sie gehört zu jenen, die sich für Geschichte interessieren. Die New Yorkerin haitianischer Abstammung hat sich im Bayou von Louisiana niedergelassen, um besser nach ihren kreolischen Wurzeln zu suchen, in den Widerstand zu gehen, soziale und umweltpolitische Ungerechtigkeiten aufzudecken und anzuprangern. Acht Jahre in der Sonne von New Orleans haben sie aufblühen lassen. Leyla McCalla hat das Cello beiseitegelegt, um sich mehr mit Klarinette, Geige, Klavier und E-Gitarre zu beschäftigen. Die Multiinstrumentalistin lässt sich zum ersten Mal von einer Gruppe begleiten, King James & The Special Men, und von verschiedenen Stilrichtungen inspirieren. Der Retro-Folk von Capitalist Blues schließt Calypso (Mize Pa Dous), R&B (Me and My Baby) oder kreolischen Blues (Lavi Vye Neg) mit ein, während ihre Stimme, mal auf Kreolisch, mal auf Englisch die verschiedenen Unebenheiten ausgleicht.
