Pandemie, Ausgangsbeschränkungen und physische Distanz bilden den Ausgangs- und Zielpunkt dieses Solo-Klavieralbums, das aufzunehmen und zu veröffentlichen Brad Mehldau offensichtlich nicht vorgesehen hatte. Die Auswirkungen dieser irrealen Situation reichen bis in die Titel der Kompositionen von Suite: April 2020 (waking up, stepping outside, keeping distance, stopping, listening: hearing, remembering before all this, uncertainty, the day moves by…) und auf dem Cover ein Text aus Mehldaus Feder, zur Erläuterung einer Aufgabe, die schlussendlich eher faszinierend als frustrierend erscheint. Faszinierend ist auch sein Spiel, das wesentlich schlichter klingt als sonst. Als ob auch jede einzelne Note ihre Daseinsberechtigung hinterfragen würde. Eine Atmosphäre, die Mehldaus Improvisationen eine nie dagewesene Einfachheit, eine surrealistische Unschuld verleiht. Einfachheit, die vielleicht daher rührt, dass er wie nie zuvor die alltäglichen Pflichten und Freuden mit seiner Familie teilt, wie er es auf dem Cover beschreibt. Und auch in der Art, wie er seine Gedanken, einen Spaziergang durch sein Innenleben, mit drei Liedern abschließt: mit Neil Youngs Don't Let It Bring You Down, einem Lied, das ihm regelmäßig als Stütze diente, Billy Joels New York State of Mind, ein Liebesbrief an den Big Apple, der während der Epidemie sehr gelitten hat und den er als sein Zuhause betrachtet, obwohl er dort nicht mehr lebt, und der Klassiker Look for the Silver Lining, der diese Sequenz, während derer die Erde (fast) aufhörte, sich zu drehen, beruhigend, warm und voller Hoffnung beendet. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz
