Alaska native Hilary Gardner grew up singing country tunes in local bars before moving to New York and establishing herself on Broadway and as a singer of jazz and standards. With 2024's On the Trail with the Lonesome Pines, she embraces her roots singing classic country & western swing songs of the 1930s and '40s. These are cinematically lyrical songs inspired by the iconography of the Old West. Many were written by the storied composers of Broadway and film, such as Johnny Mercer and Frank Loesser, who specifically wrote them for the classic singing cowboy actors of the day, like Gene Autry, Roy Rogers, and even Bing Crosby, the latter of whom sang Johnny Mercer's "I'm an Old Cowhand (From the Rio Grande)" in the 1936 film Rhythm on the Range. Here, Gardner collects that song, along with others from the singing cowboy era like "Along the Navajo Trail," "Song of the Sierras," and "Lights of Old Santa Fe." Blessed with a clear tone and favoring an unadorned singing style she occasionally accents with a sweet vibrato, Gardner often recalls the work of Linda Ronstadt, another singer whose work bridged pop, jazz, and country sounds. Helping Gardner achieve this rootsy yet harmonically nuanced vibe is her Lonesome Pines band, featuring guitarist/multi-instrumentalist Justin Poindexter, bassist Noah Garabedian, drummer Aaron Thurston, and accordionist Sasha Papernik. Together with producer Eli Wolf, they frame Gardner with fittingly twangy arrangements that have a haunting, out-of-time quality. A talented jazz guitarist at home in older swing styles, as well as modern jazz and rock, Poindexter is the perfect musical trail partner, adding just the right amount of tube amp rockabilly crunch and pedal steel whine when needed, but also supplying soft layers of tumbleweed organ, mandolin, and acoustic guitar throughout. Particularly engaging is their smiling duet on the 1942 classic "Jingle Jangle Jingle (I Got Spurs)," their warm harmonies evoking the classic partnership between Bing Crosby and Rosemary Clooney. With On the Trail, Gardner strikes a perfect balance of glowing fireside cowboy nostalgia and urbane New York downtown cool.
