Siegbert Rampe is known for his thorough study of all aspects of whatever music he is performing and his detailed program notes. On this disc, he begins his series on the keyboard music of Mozart, using the notes here not only to talk about the music, but also the three different instruments he chose for playing it. Given all that research, however, his playing is far from studious. There is something in his way of playing, no matter what instrument, that speaks to the earthier nature of Mozart's music. Part of it is that Rampe uses a forceful, heavy finger action. Because of this, in the Fantasia, K. 475, and Sonata in C minor, K. 457, played on a fortepiano, the drama of the music comes out and foreshadows that of Beethoven. His playing also causes the keyboard action of the clavichord, used for the smaller works on this disc, to be as loud as the music at times. Rampe dives into the music, adding a lot of extra ornamentation and "improvised" variations of phrases in the second parts of expositions, in recapitulations, and in other repeated passages to give them greater interest. He uses the harpsichord for the Sonata in G major, K. 283, which adds to the elegance of the music and his ornamentation, but even the slower Andante movement has a feeling of a headlong rush to it. Rampe's Mozart may not appeal to everyone, but he certainly brings freshness and exuberance to music that is usually thought of as graceful and elegant. The sound of the recording is well engineered so that even the clavichord is quite clear and warm and not too much quieter than the fortepiano and harpsichord.
