Punk rock--or at least what many perceived as "punk rock"--ruled the charts in 1995. As Green Day, Offspring, and others capitalized on the spirit of punk, punk/hardcore founding fathers Bad Brains reunited their original lineup. Ric Ocasek, who produced 1983's ROCK FOR LIGHT, was back on board for GOD OF LOVE, the Bad Brains' Maverick Records debut. The album failed to break the band to the mainstream, but it showed that the quartet still meant business.
Ultra-stimulated rockers such as "Cool Mountaineer," "Justice Keepers," the title track, and "Tongue Tee Tie" prove to be highlights, as do the ska-laced compositions "Overs the Water" and "Big Fun." An ill-fated tour ended abruptly--due to singer H.R.'s erratic behavior--led to the termination of the band's Maverick contract, preventing GOD OF LOVE from bringing the legendary band to a deserved wider audience.
