Free the Twin is a collection of Glasgow indie rock band V-Twin's singles for Domino. The duo is comprised of singer Jason McPhail and drummer Michael McGaughin, who are pals with Scottish treasures the Pastels and, like them, aren't easy to pin down to one sound. The tunes on Free the Twin cover a wide range of the indie rock spectrum, encompassing the driving Krautrock of "Delinquency," the ramshackle and majestic Sister Lovers-era Big Star-inspired "Derailed," the tribal post-rock minimalism of "In the Land of Pharoahs," the sparkling indie dance-pop of "Thankyou Baby" (as mixed with his usual brio by Kid Loco), the shaggy country-rock of "Sound as Ever," the dreamy, meandering electronica of "Lunan" (mixed by Bal), and the strange sound collage of "An Amonite for Bill" (mixed with no regard for coherence by Adam and Eve). "Delinquency" is also remixed by Jagz Kooner and Phil Mossman (loud and rocked-out sounding like a young and loose Primal Scream) and by Adam and Eve (a weird mix of honky tonk, Suicide, and a fuzzy AM radio); "In the Land of the Pharoahs" is remixed by Cinema and turned into a moody, nocturnal trip-hop epic. Free the Twin is a nice picture of a diverse and interesting band; those who like their indie rock unpredictable and exciting should give it a spin.
