The duo that made Focus what they were hadn't recorded together for ten years previous to this release, and it shows. A staggering inability to write material of the quality found in earlier albums is present throughout the synth-laden Focus. Also, an obvious influence from the sound of the time is ever-present -- reverberated drums, masses of keyboards, and synthesizers are all prominent features on the album. Focus is exactly what one would not want from a reunion of these two masters of instrumental rock: an album that tries to be what their earlier work was, but shaped by the sound of the '80s. The mixture, unfortunately, doesn't work. The 20-minute epics that were often the highlights of Focus albums are here tedious and unimaginative. Akkerman's guitar work is dull, baring little resemblance to the style he was so praised for in his heyday. Thijs Van Leer's songwriting is conspicuously weaker in terms of musicianship and quality also. From the opening track through to the 15-minute "Who's Calling," the album is downright disappointing. While the thought of such a reunion will excite any Focus fan, the result quashes any hopes. Steer well clear.
