Although bassist Lindsey Horner contributed all seven originals, the most impressive voice throughout this modern post-bop date is pianist Neal Kirkwood, whose melodic yet sometimes adventurous improvisations recall Keith Jarrett a little. Tenor saxophonist Erwin Vann is fine, but his solos are short and his tone is a bit generic. Lindsey takes some lyrical spots along the way, and drummer Jeff Williams is tasteful in support. About the only unusual moments on the date are "Over the Water," which finds Kirkwood switching to the kalimba, and the rather dark "Keith Richards," during which Kirkwood plays the melodica. Throughout the program, the music is mostly relaxed and thoughtful, well-played but generally forgettable, without any particularly memorable themes or out-of-the-ordinary solos.
