Tulipa Ruiz
One of the greatest exponents of modern-day MPB, Brazilian singer-songwriter Tulipa Ruiz Chagas is the originator of a kaleidoscopic brand of pop music she self-describes as "forest pop." She was born on October 19, 1978, in São Paulo, Brazil. After her parents' divorce, she relocated to the city of São Lourenço in the state of Minas Gerais, where she spent most of her formative years. At the age of 22, Tulipa Ruiz moved back to São Paulo to study journalism at the city's Catholic University. Even though she was involved in several musical projects during her college years, it wasn't until 2010 that she made her official recording debut with the album Efêmera, whose title track appeared in the soundtrack of the video game FIFA 11. She followed this success with 2012's Tudo Tanto, which was recognized with a Multishow Brazilian Music Award and an APCA Award. More dance-oriented than her previous efforts, her third full-length Dancê appeared in 2015 and won Best Portuguese Language Contemporary Pop Album at the Latin Grammys. Its follow-up album, Tu, saw the light in 2017 and mainly consisted of stripped-down reworkings of old songs, as well as new tracks like "Game" or "Terrorista del Amor." Preceded by the single "Samaúma," her fifth album in five years, Habilidades Extraordinárias (2022) entered the Brazilian Top 100 at Number 33.
