Stradivaria
Stradivaria, in full named Stradivaria: Ensemble Baroque de Nantes, is among France's leading ensembles specializing in Baroque music. The group has cultivated a distinctive sound that it has applied to both French Baroque works and those from beyond France.
Stradivaria was founded in 1987 by violinist Daniel Cuiller, who left the pioneering French group Les Arts Florissants in order to create the new ensemble. He had already established an earlier group, the Ensemble Baroque de France, which impressed William Christie enough that he offered Cuiller the first violin chair in Les Arts Florissants. Cuiller's motivation for the newer ensemble was to explore both obscure and familiar works, mostly but not exclusively French, in new interpretations. Stradivaria proclaims that "in their approach to performing Baroque music, these expert performers have created what has come to be known as the 'Stradivaria sound.' rich and vibrant, full of life, imbued with tenderness and poetry, instantly recognisable." The group is a string ensemble but has expanded to contain other instruments when venturing forward into music of the Classical period. Based in the western French city of Nantes, where it holds the title of permanent Baroque ensemble-in-residence, Stradivaria has performed across France as well as in such faraway venues as the Hanoi Opera and the Croisements Festival in Beijing. In 2015, the group performed and recorded a series of grands motets, Les Victoires de Louis XV, at Versailles palace. Especially notable has been Stradivaria's large discography, which began in 1995 with an album of Concerts en sextuor by Rameau. Signed to the Mirare label in 2005, Stradivaria has released several unique world premieres, including that of the opera Pirame et Thisbé (1728) by François Francoeur and François Rebel. The year 2019 saw two new releases by Stradivaria: the group joined cellist Raphaël Pidoux for an album of cello concertos by Jean-Louis Duport, and later in the year they issued La Guerre de Te Deum, featuring works involved in an 18th century composition competition. With the group Anacréon, Stradivaria operates a competition of its own, the International Early Music Competition of the Loire Valley.
