Jodie Devos
Jodie Devos is a versatile soprano whose performances and recordings often feature unusual repertory. She was the second prize winner at the 2014 Queen Elisabeth Competition in Belgium.
Devos was born in Libramont-Chevigny, Belgium, on October 10, 1988. When she was five, her parents signed her up for a choral singing class in nearby Neufchâteau and noticed that she greatly enjoyed singing. That class focused on popular songs, but Devos was later exposed to classical music when she began taking ballet lessons. She studied voice at the Institute of Music and Pedagogy in Namur, taking lessons from Benoît Giaux and Elise Gäbele. Devos went on to the Royal Academy of Music in London, studying with Lillian Watson and earning a master's degree in 2013. The following year, she entered the Queen Elisabeth Competition, but in the preliminary round, she suffered a fainting spell after singing just two songs. The jury agreed to give her a second chance, and she roared back, winning second prize and the audience award. Later that year, she joined the permanent ensemble of the Opéra-Comique in Paris, singing a variety of roles and replacing an ailing Sabine Devieilhe as Adèle in Johann Strauss' operetta La Chauve-Souris.
That opened doors to appearances at opera companies across France, including those of Montpellier, Tours, and Dijon. Devos also proved a popular concert attraction, performing across France, Germany, and the Netherlands and as far afield as India, North America, and Brazil. She has graced marquees at various festivals in France and at the major U.S. festival Mostly Mozart in New York. Devos' recording debut came in 2016 on the Alpha label with the recital Il était une fois, backed by pianist Caroline Meng and the Quatuor Giardini. Among her major opera production credits is a 2017 production of Debussy's Pelléas et Mélisande at the Opéra Bastille in Paris, directed by Robert Wilson, and an appearance as Olimpia in Offenbach's Les contes d'Hoffmann, again at the Opéra Bastille, in 2020. That composer was the subject of Devos' critically acclaimed album Offenbach: Colorature, which appeared on Alpha in 2019.
Devos has appeared with the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France, Orchestre Philharmonique de Monte Carlo, and the Orchestre Philharmonique Royal de Liège, among others. Devos has continued to record for Alpha, issuing the album And Love Said... in 2021; it included French, Belgian, and English material, including a song by Queen frontman Freddie Mercury. Devos has also championed modern works by Belgian composers. In 2022, she was heard on four different albums, a recording of Pergolesi's Stabat Mater with the Maîtrise de Radio France choir, the Quatuor Voce album Poétiques de l'instant, a recording of Rameau's 1749 opera Zoroastre featuring soprano Véronique Gens, and her own recital of neglected French opera arias, Bijoux Perdus.
