For those who, like this writer, are curious about this album with a subverted Bond title: Dutch baritone Henk Neven (Covent Garden, Opéra de Paris, La Monnaie in Bruxelles, Berlin's Staatsoper, Theater an der Wien, Grand Théâtre de Bordeaux, Opéra National de Montpellier, De Nederlandse Opera etc.) sings a handful of beautiful Russian romances by Glinka – including the famous Lullaby – Tchaikovsky, Dargomyzhsky, Rachmaninov and Borodin. Cellist Jan Bastiaan Neven offers us passages from Chout by Prokofiev rewritten for cello and piano, and joins with the baritone on the romances which call for a string part along with the piano accompaniment. This accompaniment is provided by the pianist Hans Eijsackers, who also offers a little pair of solo pieces by Rachmaninoff, including the rare arrangement that the composer wrote for Mussorgsky's The Fair at Sorochyntsi. And there it is! All that remains is for you to discover this sumptuous baritone with a velvet bass, across these equally sumptuous repertoires, some of which are tackled all too rarely. © SM/Qobuz
