Ever since the release of their first album Yonder in 2016, the Danish trio Little North has been viewed as one of the most promising bands in the young Scandinavian jazz scene. Their fame has since ventured past the borders of their native Denmark, as they begin making a name for themselves further afield. Their previous albums have featured a stunning piano/bass/drum trio characterised by the paradoxical combination of lyricism and restraint that’s so typical of Nordic jazz. However, their last album, Familiar Places, released in January 2021, broadened this sound with the addition of trumpeter Kasper Tranberg and guitarist Viktor Spasov.
Little North goes back to basics with Wide Open, expertly summarising the essential ingredients of their art. Returning to the trio format and prioritising collective discourse over any individual monologue, this new release reveals a world of rich, original tracks, all developed upon an orchestral backdrop which serves as a canvas for improvisation. The minimalist lyricism of pianist Benjamin Nørholm Jacobsen and the beautiful presence of double bassist Martin Brunbjerg Rasmussen (the full extent of his skill is showcased in ‘Elna’ - a kind of miniature concerto for double bass) are particularly commendable here.
