Für sein drittes Album The Marshall Mathers LP von 2000 wurde Eminem mit einer Diamant-Schallplatte ausgezeichnet. Hinzu kommt, dass diese Veröffentlichung von Kritikern weltweit zu den wichtigsten Rap-Alben per se gezählt wird. Dreizehn Jahre später erschien Part 2, der als nahtlose Fortsetzung zu verstehen ist. Für Wiedererkennung sorgt neben dem breiten und ausführlichen Storytelling die Figur des Slim Shady, welche nicht nur im Track "Brainless" auftaucht. Thematisch widmet sich der US-Künstler wie zuvor seiner eigener Vergangenheit, im Speziellen seiner Kindheit ("Rhyme or Reason"). Präsentiert wird das dem Hörer in einer Mischung aus Satire und schwarzen Humor. Im Sound zeigt sich eine gewisse Diversität, die von düsteren Beats ("So Much Better") bis hin zu Synthieklängen ("Rap God") reicht.
