Für "The Complex" hat die normalerweise der Instrumentalmusik verschriebene Blue Man Group einige bekannte Gastsänger eingeladen, darunter Dave Matthews, Tracy Bonham, Venus Hum und der namhafteste von allen: Gavin Rossdale, Sänger der Band "Bush". Mit Gavin nahmen die blauen Männer "The Current" für den neuesten Terminator-Soundtrack auf - die Symbiose erweist sich als perfekt.
Die Gitarren, der Gesang und die Songstruktur sind typisch Bush, und doch merkt man, dass die Blue Man Group ihre Finger im Spiel hat. So wirkt der Sound komplexer konstruiert und synthetischer als bei Bush-Songs. "The Current" hat Hitcharakter und wird die Blue Man Group sicherlich auch auf dieser Seite des Teichs bekannter machen.
Was die Blue Man Group auf "The Complex" ausmacht, ist ihre Art, Lieder zu schreiben. Gekonnt bastelt die BMG aus ihren komplizierten Rhythmuskonstrukten, den Instrumenten und dem Gesang ausgefeilte Rocksongs mit Charakter. Die Drums weisen stellenweise sogar Ethno- und Tribal-Einflüsse auf, wobei die Beats nach vorne gehen und nicht im Wirrwarr der Vertracktheit hängen bleiben. Simple 4/4 Beats wird man deshalb auf "The Complex" nicht oft zu hören bekommen, ist auch gar nicht schade darum.
Nach dem instrumentalen Intro "Above" geht es bei "Time To Start" mit dem ausgefeilten Getrommel los. Die Drums dominieren hier unaufdringlich, wie fast bei jedem Lied auf dieser Scheibe, Bass und Gitarre stehen mehr im Hintergrund. Zwischendurch erfreuen einige perfekt in die Rhythmus-Frickeleien eingebundene Sprachsamples.
In "Sing Along" gibt Dave Matthews sein Bestes zum Sound der BMG. Langsam, groovend und extrem geschmeidig wirkt der Song mit dieser warmen Stimme. Josh Haden verleiht "Persona" mit seiner lasziven Stimme einen besonders relaxten Touch. Der Track gefällt auf Anhieb, weil er sich extrem angenehm anhören lässt und einen für die Blue Man Group fast schon schlichten, dafür aber prägnant genialen Rhythmus hat.
Peter Moores Stimme prägt "The Complex", das sich von einer ruhigen Ballade in ein pulsierendes Rhythmusgewitter entwickelt, um dann wieder in einer ruhigen Ballade zu enden. "I Feel Love" versichert uns Venus Hum; übrigens eine Coverversion des bekannten Donna Summer Hits. Der Song hat enormen Pepp, immer wieder überwältigt der abartige Drive der Drumsounds. Obwohl manche Instrumentalstücke auf Dauer zu wenig Eigenständigkeit aufweisen, ist die Platte dank der vielen Gastsänger und dem qualitativ hochwertigen Songwriting doch sehr vielseitig und durch die hervorragenden Drum Sounds ein erfrischend anderes Pop/Rockalbum mit vielen potenziellen Hits.
