It may seem odd, but Justo Betancourt's reunion with his former employer, Sonora Matancera, seems like an effort stuck in a time capsule; Betancourt's vocalizing is fit to perfection after a decade of success on his own right and doesn't have any relevance to Latin America's oldest musical institution. Javier Vazquez, one of Matancera's regular arrangers, brings his consummate professionalism to the outfit. "Mala Pata" was the highly heralded number, but tunes like "Escuchen Mi Canto," "Hoy Se Más," "Encarnación Valdés," "Florecilla de Amor," and the superb "Cualquier Resbala y Cae" assert Betancourt as a vocalist with a compelling mix of raw commitment and charismatic personality. Betancourt and Matancera are again at their best.
