The pieces for the harpsichord by Nicolas Siret (1663-1754, a contemporary of François Couperin, and Siret lived to the venerable age of 91, which allowed him to witness the passing of many different epochs in French music) are only known from two editions of the publication which he authored himself, the first Book of Dances, which came out in 1705, the second in 1719. We can only rejoice at the existence of these very rare artefacts of one of French baroque music's lesser-known composers. It is true that he never rose to join the ranks of "high society", that is, the Court, but remained peaceably in Troyes, where he was the town organ player, a role played by the men in his family for at least three generations. This did not stop him from visiting Couperin in Paris and having enough important contacts to obtain the services of the best Parisian craftsmen for the restoration or manufacture of organs for Troyes. His works, five Suites (two from the first Book, which he dedicated to Couperin, three from the second, which he dedicated to Bossuet, Bishop of Troyes, nephew of the more famous Jacques-Bénigne Bossuet), attest to his deep knowledge of the musical art of the time - and that of his contemporary and friend Couperin in particular - and of the recent past - Lully, especially - as well as a perfect command of the style of writing most appropriate to this instrument. © SM/Qobuz
