Nach dem verdienten Gewinn des ersten Moonmans bei den MTV Video Music Awards 2003 kommt nach 10 Jahren im Rap-Game der nächste überfällige Business-Move der Ausnahmerapperin. Auf ihrer ersten Greatest Hits-Scheibe fasst Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott 15 Hits ihrer sechs Studioalben zusammen und legt als Schmankerl für ihre Die-Hard-Fans noch zwei Tracks drauf.
Von "The Rain" aus den Anfangstagen über "Get Ur Freak On" und "One Minute Man" bis zu "She's A B**ch" fehlen auf dieser Compilation natürlich keine der großen Nummern. In dem Stück "Teary Eyed" glänzt Missy gar mit von ihr eher ungewohntem aber durchaus vorhandenem sängerischem Talent. Auf der ersten Auskopplung der Best Of "We Run This" zeigt sie gleich mit den Worten "My style can't be duplicated or recycled", wo der Hammer hängt, und zwar bei ihr und sonst nirgendwo. Beide Tracks findet man auch auf dem letzten Studio-Album "The Cookbook".
Obwohl beide Tracks überdurchschnittlich gut sind und durchaus Hitpotenzial besitzen, hätten sie nicht zwingend auf diese Best-Of zwischen all die anderen Hitsingles gehört. So scheint es, als wäre noch zu füllender Platz auf der Best-Of übrig gewesen. Die Hookline von "We Run This" basiert übrigens auf einem bekannten Western-Theme. Missy sucht eben immer nach prägnanten, experimentellen Samples. Ihren innovativen Ruf unterstreichen auch die teilweise richtig abgefahrenen Videos ("Pass That Dutch", "Get Ur Freak On" oder "Lose Control").
Missy, die bekanntermaßen mit Timbaland an ihren Beats schraubt, gilt als erste Frau, die in der Männerdomäne Hip Hop kommerziell erfolgreich war. Als Produzentin von Künstlerinnen wie Janet Jackson oder Aaliyah, Labelchefin und Songwriterin machte sie sich darüber hinaus einen Namen.
Doch nicht nur musikalisch hat sie eine Menge erreicht, sondern auch finanziell gehört Missy längst zu den großen Playern. Wer ein MTV Cribs mit ihr gesehen hat, weiß, wovon ich hier spreche. Alles in allem also höchste Zeit für eine Best Of.
