The orchestral music of Maurice Ravel is usually represented on single CD collections by Boléro, La valse, and the Pavane pour une infante défunte, along with excerpts from Daphnis et Chloé Suite No. 2, the Rhapsodie espagnole, and one or two other short selections, so the value of having all of his major works for orchestra complete in one convenient package can't be overlooked. This double-disc presents recordings Bernard Haitink and the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra made in the 1970s, and even though the reproduction is analog, the quality of the orchestral sound in the spacious acoustics is exceptional, even when compared to many all-digital recordings. Haitink certainly has a strong aptitude for Ravel's elegant and vibrant music, and the orchestra is well-suited to deliver its beguiling themes, brilliant colors, and supple rhythms, so the performances have all the freshness and charm that are required. In addition to the pieces cited above, this album includes the popular Alborada del gracioso, Valses nobles et sentimentales, the Menuet antique, Le tombeau de Couperin, and the complete ballet of Ma mère l'oye. This set of classic recordings is recommended for anyone who needs a solid introduction to Ravel.
