Nicht nur die 19 Stücke, sondern auch die genaue Instrumentierung und die besetzungsmäßige Steigerung des Inhalts machen diese Sammlung von Werken Giovanni Picchis (um 1571- 1643), der in der Kirche della Frari zu Venedig angestellt war, zu etwas Besonderem. Dass die Stücke bislang so wenig Beachtung gefunden hat, kann nicht an der Musik selbst liegen. So also könnte zu Monteverdis Lebzeiten Venedig instrumental geklungen haben. Dass eine derart farbige und lebendige Einspielung entstanden ist, verdankt sich freilich im Wesentlichen den Musikern des Concerto Scirocco.
