Murray A. Lightburn first rose to prominence in the 2000s as lead singer of Montreal's The Dears, a celebrated indie rock band indebted to the swooning melodrama of The Smiths and fond of the lush orchestration popular with Canadian artists of the era. As a solo artist, Lightburn has veered into quieter, more introspective territory via explorations inspired by folk and jazz.

That includes the gorgeous Once Upon A Time in Montréal, an album that emerged in the wake of his dad's April 2020 death from Alzheimer's disease. Produced by Howard Bilerman (Leonard Cohen, Godspeed You! Black Emperor), Once Upon A Time in Montréal understandably wrestles with the emotional complexities of life and death: "I wish I kept a diary/ Jotted down some memories/ But now it's been too many years/ And my time is up along with all of my fears," he sings on "Reaching Out for Love," while on the lush "No New Deaths Today" Lightburn affirms, "No praying hands/ Can wipe those tears away/ So here is a plan/ To live another day" before observing, "Every day that goes by is a tribute."

In a nod to his dad's background as a Belize-born jazz musician, Lightburn collaborates with Montreal jazz musicians and layers on lovely orchestration throughout. Strings and horns augment "No New Deaths Today," while dark guitar and shivering strings also add shade to "In the Kingdom of Heaven," and "Oh But My Heart Has Never Been Dark" is midnight-hued jazz-pop. Yet the album's minimalist moments, such as the sparse, guitar-pricked "The Only One I Want to Hear," are just as deeply affecting. Once Upon A Time in Montréal can be compared favorably to the music of Bill Withers and Nick Drake—but it finds Lightburn carving out his own unique way forward. © Annie Zaleski/Qobuz
