In the version of "I'm an Old Cowhand (from the Rio Grande)" that opens this album, Crosby sums it up best when he sings "I'm a cowboy who never saw a cow." In other words, this isn't exactly Jimmie Rodgers. While Crosby does seem to show genuine affection for the material, the songs here are more of the Gene Autry/Sons of the Pioneers "cowboy" variety than what we know as country today. The arrangements are based not around guitar, but a sprightly big band with strings, occasionally achieving the kind of early country/jazz synthesis for which Bob Wills was aiming. It may be surprising to hear songs of the trail such as "Cool Water" and "Tumbling Tumbleweeds" delivered in Crosby's trademark croon, but the original cowboy singers brought a mixture of country/folk and mainstream pop to their music anyhow, so it makes a strange kind of sense. The varied strains of pop and cowboy music eventually dovetail nicely into a collection that may bewilder country traditionalists, but will be enlightening to any Crosby fan.
