The Leos Janácek fan-in-training cannot help but note the high number of apparently sacred choral and organ pieces found in the earlier part of his worklist. This proves surprising to some, as Janácek is well known for his openly pantheistic stance, expressed in such works as the Glagolithic Mass, at a time when most of his fellow Europeans opposed such a view. A good number of Janácek's admirers have found his music for this very reason. Nonetheless, early in his career Janácek supported himself as a choir director, organist, and conductor of sacred music and even founded an organization called the "Society for the Promotion of Church Music in Moravia." The Griffin CD Leos Janácek: The Lord's Prayer provides a nice cross section of Janácek's early sacred music, up through the period where his mature style begins to evolve, and presents the first recording of an oddball arrangement of Franz Liszt's Missa pro organo to which Janácek added text but no music.
The disc features Stephen Darlington and the Christ Church Cathedral Choir, Oxford, whose talents are familiar from their extensive work together on the Nimbus label. This was recorded in the Christ Church Cathedral itself and is very boomy and somewhat distant, but it has a big sound, all of the music is clearly heard, and the large reverberation suits Janácek's music well. The title piece, The Lord's Prayer, is a standout performance with excellent solo singing by tenor Andrew Carwood, and the notes by Janácek scholar Ivan Moody are engaging and highly informative. Leos Janácek: The Lord's Prayer also features nice harp playing by Victoria Davies and organ by Clive Driskill-Smith.
Listeners who fancy Janácek will not want to miss Leos Janácek: The Lord's Prayer which may also appeal to those who enjoy sacred church music in general but are not particularly well acquainted with the composer.
