After the success of the single Old Town Road by Lil Was X in 2019 and its crude but extremely effective mix of rap and country, RMR carries on the torch. With some differences: less playful and heavier, his debut EP entitled Drug Dealing Is a Lost Art combined the formula used by his predecessor with a more pronounced gravity. What’s more, there is the mask that RMR always wears, shedding doubt on his identity and history. Anonymity and country, an unpredictable combination but fiendishly well delivered. The archetype of this mix can be seen clearly on the track I’m Not Over You, which begins with a banjo and vocal harmonies you would think were straight out of an Alan Jackson or Tim McGraw album. Or maybe Rascal, an ultra-kitsch country ballad. Some more conventionally rap tracks scan be found with Nouveau Riche, Best Friend, and Dealer which feature Future and Lil Baby, artists that are clearly aware of the role they are playing in such a phenomenon. © Brice Miclet/Qobuz
