Marking the 400th anniversary of Byrd's death in 1623, this release by the St. Thomas Choir of Men and Boys loosely re-creates a Catholic mass for the Feast of Corpus Christi, including the Mass for four voices and smaller works that Byrd composed for the Catholic recusant ceremonies held on the D.L. in Protestant England. One of the main attractions, however, would not have been part of such a ceremony at all; the Great Service at the end, in English, was written for Protestant services and gleefully disregarded severe Anglican strictures on text-settings. This Great Service was recorded in 1981 at the Church of St. Mary the Virgin under former conductor and organist Gerre Hancock, and it helped put this all-male choir on the map. It has never been available on CD, much less on digital streams. The other pieces were recorded at St. Thomas (the organ works) and at the Church of St. Paul the Apostle. Producer Adrian Peacock does reasonably well at knitting these diverse sound sources into a whole. The hugely reverberant choral acoustic will not be to all tastes, and this is a big American performance in every way. This is not a bad thing; the market is full of English Byrd performances, and it is worth hearing the music in a different way. With a large choir in a big space, the dissonances in Byrd's motets come off as little stabs of color; listened to closely, these are sensitive Byrd performances, although they are hardly intimate. The Latin pieces come from various phases of Byrd's career, and even lovers of the composer will find some unfamiliar pieces here. Most Renaissance choral fans will find this a novel and stimulating release.
