This absorbing album was made in 2019 and apparently shelved during the COVID-19 pandemic; it was finally released in 2024, and the Naxos label deserves credit for not letting it get lost in the shuffle. It delivers exactly what the title promises: Brahms' Hungarian Dances are paired with their sources in Hungarian folk tradition, with the emphasis on the plural: many of the Brahms pieces had more than one source. Brahms made no secret of the fact that his Hungarian Dances were adapted from folk sources rather than being original, but in fact, he was being a bit self-effacing; his compositional input is clear. Perhaps the most interesting thing here is that it is not simply a question of folk music; there are traditional pieces and also folk-style works written by named composers. The situation is something like that in Ireland and Scotland in the 18th century, where folk music still existed, but composers were beginning to notate and adapt it. Brahms drew on both types. There are instrumental and vocal pieces; in the former, the musicians here (the prime movers seem to have been soprano Adrienn Miksch and tenor Janós Bandi) use mid-19th century fortepianos, with a modern grand in the Brahms pieces. Given the popularity of the Hungarian Dances, it may seem a bit surprising that no one has done a project like this before, but the complexity of the documentation gives an idea of the difficulties involved. For the general listener, there is no difficulty; the album makes for fascinating listening. Consider the two pieces at the beginning of CD 2 for an instance in which Brahms stuck close to his model, but the degree of closeness varies a lot, and in that lies a good deal of interest.
