Tex Crick

Much like singer/songwriter forebears Randy Newman and Harry Nilsson, Australia's Tex Crick writes melodic piano pop with a soft heart and wry intelligence. Rising from small town roots on the country's south coast, he cut his teeth in the mid-2010s as a touring keyboardist for artists like Kirin J. Callinan, Iggy Pop, and Weyes Blood before a chance encounter with Mac DeMarco in New York led to the release of his solo debut. Self-recorded between tours in a New York apartment and released by DeMarco's personal label, Live In...New York City arrived in March 2021, followed by 2023's Sweet Dreamin'. Hailing from the coastal town of Coledale in New South Wales, Crick was musically active during his high school years, often taking a two-hour train ride north to hear bands in Sydney. During one of these big city visits, he met singer/songwriter Kirin J. Callinan who hired him sight unseen to join his band. World tours with Callinan soon led to other opportunities for the versatile keyboardist and by the late 2010s, he'd been on the road with Iggy Pop, Weyes Blood, and fellow Australian eccentric Connan Mockasin. Meanwhile, Crick had developed his own idiosyncratic songwriting style loosely rooted in '70s pop and soft rock. During a New York tour date with Mockasin, he met Mac DeMarco on the street and was invited to the latter's birthday party. A friendship soon developed and in between tours with other acts, Crick rented an apartment in New York and split his time between songwriting and apprenticing in the craft of piano tuning and repair. He refurbished an old upright piano he found on the street in Queens and recorded most of his debut on it, often keeping his window open to let in the sounds of the city. DeMarco later mixed the sessions and made Crick the first signee to his own imprint, Mac's Record Label. Titled Live In...New York City, the album was released in March 2021. In 2023, he returned with Sweet Dreamin', which found him playing almost all the instruments and further fleshing out his rustic, '70s-infuenced sound.
