Sam Burton

Throughout the latter half of the 2010s, singer/songwriter Sam Burton's ambling, melancholy reflections earned him cache in the D.I.Y. cassette world, eventually leading to a deal with respected West Coast indie Tompkins Square, which released the full-length I Can Go with You in 2020. He also formed the retro-leaning folk-rock project Sylvie with Ben Schwab and Marina Allen which debuted in 2021. Switching over to the Partisan label, Burton resumed his solo career in 2023 with the spacious, string-laden LP Dear Departed. A Salt Lake City native, Burton illicitly taught himself to play guitar as a teenager, sneaking practice sessions on his stepfather's off-limits guitar. Inspired by the Beach Boys and Velvet Underground, he played in a shoegaze band before relocating to Los Angeles and developing a more acoustic folk-based approach that included ambient, sometimes psychedelic textures and introspective lyricism. He rose through the D.I.Y. cassette scene, releasing evocative and haunting homemade music on the Chthonic label and earning praise from small but influential blogs. After signing with Tompkins Square, the San Francisco label issued a pair of limited-edition 7" singles, followed in late 2020 by Burton's debut album, I Can Go with You, which was produced by Jarvis Taveniere (Real Estate, Purple Mountains). Rather than move directly into more solo work, Burton's next project was a three-way collaboration with fellow singer/songwriters Ben Schwab (Golden Daze) and Marina Allen. Naming the band Sylvie after an Iain Matthews Fairport Convention song (which they also cover), the trio released their eponymous debut in 2021 along with a scattering of warmly recorded folk-rock singles. Meanwhile, Burton continued performing as a solo artist, notching tours with Loving and Jose Gonzalez, among others. He soon signed with the eclectic folk label, Partisan Records, to release his sophomore LP. Featuring production from Jonathan Wilson (Father John Misty, Margo Price), 2023's Dear Departed built on the vintage-leaning aesthetic of his debut while reckoning lyrically with themes of pain and loss.
