Rhian Sheehan

The delicate, often somber experimental ambient music of Rhian Sheehan draws texture from instruments spanning orchestral and international folk instruments, guitars, and various synthesizers as well as field recordings and objects like music boxes. The composer/producer made his full-length recording debut with Paradigm Shift in 2001. As he continued to release his own compositions, his scoring résumé grew to encompass films, games, television, advertising, and things like exhibits, planetarium shows, and amusement park rides. After issuing Live at the Wellington Opera House in 2015, his 2018 studio album, A Quiet Divide, was his most expansive yet, featuring over a dozen guest performers, including members of the Stroma FilmWorks Orchestra. Born in Nelson, New Zealand and based in Wellington, Rhian Sheehan emerged in the early 2000s with Paradigm Shift, the first in a long partnership with LOOP Recordings. With production by Sheehan, Neil Aldridge, Bevan Smith, and Matthew Mitchell, Tiny Blue Biosphere followed in mid-2004, and the remix collection Music for Nature Documentaries arrived before the end of the year. Accompanying photography by Grant Sheehan, New Zealand Landscapes (Northland to Antarctica) followed in 2008. A year later, Rhian released Standing in Silence; a limited-edition CD came packaged with a music box, a device featured prominently on one of its tracks. In 2009, his music could also be heard in the New Zealand TV drama The Cult and the TV movie Reservoir Hill. His EP Seven Tales of the North Wind followed in 2011, and NBC featured Sheehan's music on their coverage of the London Olympics in 2012. In 2013, Sheehan issued Stories from Elsewhere, a largely self-recorded album with additional performances and recording/engineering from Lee Prebble (The Black Seeds). Taken from shows in June 2010 and November 2013, Live at the Wellington Opera House saw release in 2015. That year, the documentary Belief: The Possession of Janet Moses began appearing on the international film festival circuit; his original score for the movie was issued separately in 2017. The following year brought the studio album A Quiet Divide, whose many guests included frequent collaborators Prebble and Ryan Youens, as well as the New Zealand release of the film Stray, featuring a score by Sheehan.
