Cymarshall Law

A well-traveled New Jersey-based MC of Jamaican descent born on England's shores, Cymarshall Law makes rhymes that are as worldly and diverse as his background. Early mixtapes and the 2007 debut album Hip Hop in the Flesh presented his unbridled energy and conscious lyrics over inventive boom-bap production, and 2010's Freedom Express Line incorporated reggae rhythms and samples. Between 2008 and 2016, he released three volumes of the Hip Hop in the Soul series with producer Mr. Joeker, the first of which boasted a KRS-One collaboration. He's kept up a prolific level of output, with releases like 2021's I Still Love H.E.R. confirming his life-long dedication to hip-hop culture, and albums such as Monarch (with AceWonda and Broadway) maintaining his collaborative spirit. Born Cymar Simmons, he moved overseas from the U.K. to the States when he was nine years old, and a few years later -- influenced by his older brother's infatuation with rap music -- he started penning rhymes. He partnered up with his brother, an MC named Skit Slam, and the two began working in their off time to build a home studio. They put together a rap group called Everliven Sound, started their own label, Freedom Entertainment, and pressed a limited run of the vinyl EP Everlution in 2001. Law continued to self-release at least two projects a year and participated in several international tours, including performances at the Rocksteady Reunion, Scribble Jam, the DMC DJ Battle Championship, and the Vans Warped Tour. In 2007, Rawkus Records included him as part of the Rawkus 50, a roster of up-and-coming artists, and he was later named an "Unsigned Hype" by The Source. Law's first solo album, Hip Hop in the Flesh, also appeared in 2007. Everliven Sound's debut album Freedom, with Pacewon and Wordsworth features, appeared in March of 2008. Recorded with producer Mr. Joeker, the album Hip Hop in the Soul was released in November 2008 along with an accompanying single (featuring KRS-One) titled "Control." Creators Kid EP and Freedom 2 appeared in 2010, along with Freedom Express Line, a reggae-inspired effort produced by Swedish duo the Beatnikz. Hip Hop in the Soul 2, a second effort with Mr. Joeker, appeared in 2011. Two more Everliven Sound releases, Everlations and The Everending Story, both appeared in 2012. After a few years without any releases, Law issued SuPreem Law: The DJ Premier Tribute Mix CD in 2015. He made his proper return with 2016's The Main Character, as well as Hip Hop in the Soul 3. The Rhythms & Poems of Solomon Prince and Imperfectly Perfect appeared later in the decade. The instrumental release Sounds of Freedom appeared in 2019, as Law frequently released non-album singles. In 2020, Law released collaborations with AceWonda (Crossroads) and Russian producer Mudblood (Sui Generis). I Still Love H.E.R. arrived in 2021, with Queens-based MC Grafh featured on the single "The Incredibles." Law took the producer's seat for 2022's The Sorcerer's Art Supplies, which included guest lyricists such as Magiver Knowledge, Prince Divine, and Linton Kush. An EP titled Carpe Diem rounded out the year. Monarch, with AceWonda and Broadway, appeared in 2023.
