Le groupe au nom le plus cryptique des années 2010 s’était vite fait une place dans la scène indie pop anglaise avec son premier album An Awesome Wave (un titre inspiré par l’écrivain Bret Easton Ellis), couronné d’un Mercury Prize en 2012 grâce au succès de leur tube Breezeblocks. Dix ans plus tard, la formation de Leeds, un peu trop souvent comparée à Radiohead, est devenue une valeur sûre des programmateurs de festival et peut se permettre de prendre cinq ans pour donner un successeur à Relaxer, qui avait, lui, échoué aux portes du Mercury en 2017.

The Dream ne change pas les termes de l’équation établie par le trio composé de Joe Newman (chant, guitare), Gus Unger-Hamilton (claviers) et Thom Green (batterie), avec ce folk-rock parfois bluesy, parfois mâtiné d’électronique, mais toujours vaporeux, étouffé, comme si tout était enregistré à travers une boîte de ouate, à l’image du Bane qui ouvre ce quatrième essai, enregistré entre deux confinements en 2020. Il y a ici largement de quoi satisfaire les fans du groupe avec des mélodies toujours accrocheuses, notamment les efficaces singles U&ME et Hard Drive Gold. On retiendra aussi The Actor, un titre tout en guitares psyché censé raconter la mort de John Belushi, décédé en 1981 d’une overdose à l’hôtel Château Marmont à Los Angeles (“Why do I keep on returning to you? Cocaine, cocaine”). Et puis Joe Newman n’hésite pas à sortir la machine à larmoyer sur la ballade acoustique Get Better ou sur Chicago, qui mêle des vocalises plaintives avec un arpège de piano et un Thom Green presque techno derrière ses fûts, pour un des plus jolis titres d’un album qui se conclut par un doublé (Walk a Mile et Powders) de blues ultra-planant. © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz
