Si Octavarium sorti en 2005 délaissait l'aspect technique au profit d'une écriture plus orientée chanson, Dream Theater revient à ses racines hyper-progressives sur Systematic Chaos. "In The Presence Of Enemies Pt. 1" ouvre ce neuvième album studio sur des riffs enfiévrés et des envolées du duo guitare/clavier. Les cinq musiciens retiennent toutefois la bride, notamment sur les parties vocales (comme sur "Forsaken"). Si l'on trouve des éléments de thrash old school sur "Constant Motion", "The Dark Eternal Night" continue sur la lignée heavy de Train Of thought. "Repentance", sous influence Pink Floyd, laisse le champ libre à Mike Portnoy pour exorciser ses démons, tandis que "Prophets Of War" aborde pour la première fois des thèmes politiques. De bout en bout sur Systematic Chaos, Dream Theater persiste à établir le mètre étalon pour tous les autres groupes de métal progressif.
