Juillet 1996. Après le choc la consolation. La seule que les fans du groupe attendaient depuis si longtemps : Le premier véritable album de Sublime. Son titre , ironie fatale, aurait du être Killin' It.
C’est finalement avec ce titre éponyme que ce disque marquera l’histoire du rock, puisque le trio californien (frappé par la tragédie, pour rappel : la mort de son chanteur par overdose deux mois auparavant) se sépare avant même sa sortie et n’en publiera plus aucun.
S’il n’est certainement pas un chef d’œuvre d’invention, ce disque est en revanche un superbe exemple de ce que le trio avait de magique : une énergie communicative ainsi qu’un flegme et un franc parlé juvéniles, et étant donné l’histoire du groupe, figé pour l’éternité.
Le reggae est élémentaire mais bon, le mélange ska-rock est efficace ( « Seed » « Same In The End », ) le punk abrasif et hyper énergique (« Paddle Out »), la fusion entre guitares et phrasé hip-hop aura fait beaucoup d’émules. Le groove est irrésistible (« Pawn shop »), la provocation des paroles reste intemporelle.
Sublime, n’est pas un grand disque. Il donne plutôt l’occasion de regretter ce que la suite de la carrière du trio, fauchée en plein vol, aurait pu être. Sublime est un disque d’ouverture et un disque d’adieu. Sublime est un des plus gros succès de l’année 1997 dans la sphère rock alternatif. Sublime se résume en un mot : culte.
