Algiers don't need to answer for their musical lineage. The Atlanta-rooted band has made it clear in the decade since their debut single "Blood" that their crates run deeper than nearly any other group you could still generally file under rock. But while their hip-hop/post-punk eclecticism has its own integrity—being neither pure throwbacks nor decade-zero iconoclasts, given to avoid both stagnant genre-purism and touristy checkbox eclecticism—Shook reminds you that it's all for a purpose. It's thrilling enough to hear an ambitious, accomplished rock group that recognizes and converses with the world outside rock: how Wild Style first-generation hip-hop is refracted through dub and Dungeon Family on "Everybody Shatter," the way "Green Iris" sinks into an intense soul-jazz meditation that opens its third eye to envision gauzy electro-soul, and the nods to the sonics of Afrofuturists from RZA ("Cleanse Your Guilt Here") to Sun Ra ("Out of Style Tragedy"). But their more straightforward punk-lineage cuts—"73%" and "A Good Man" chief among them—hardly suffer as a result; this band knows its way around a good kick-in-the-teeth riff. And Algiers' opened doors bring in a community of collaborators that make rise to the level of the album's breadth, whether it's Zack de la Rocha getting secular-Old Testament on the RTJ-esque abrasive bounce of "Irreversible Damage," or billy woods and Backxwash heightening the pressurized doom-synth tension of "Bite Back," or even Samuel T. Herring (Future Islands) and Jae Matthews (Boy Harsher) skulking through the apocalyptic gospel of "I Can't Stand It!'' like melodic ghosts. Beyond all that, Shook is also the sound of an idea that is given an intensely resonant voice by Franklin James Fisher and the group's collaborative, reconstructed instrumentation adds life to: that catharsis is useless without joy, that struggling people can define themselves by something other than that struggle, and that if we're going to spend all this time fighting a stifling system we at least have each others' backs. © Nate Patrin/Qobuz
