L’album par lequel le scandale est arrivé... Techniquement plus abouti que son prédécesseur (Pronounced leh-‘nérd ‘skin-nérd, paru l’année précédente), cet opus de Lynyrd Skynyrd est surtout resté célèbre pour la polémique créée autour de la chanson « Sweet Home Alabama », réponse de la formation de Jacksonville aux chansons « Alabama » et « Southern Man » de Neil Young (sur l’album Harvest, grand succès de l’année 1972), critiquant le racisme viscéral des gens du Sud.
Bien qu’inoffensive et simplement patriotique vue d’aujourd’hui, « Sweet Home Alabama » devint vite – malgré les intentions du groupe – la chanson de référence de membres du Ku Klux Klan, imposant pour longtemps dans les esprits l’équation « Lynyrd Skynyrd = Croix qui brûle devant une église afro-américaine ». La sale réputation collera longtemps aux basques du groupe qui aura toutes les peines du monde à s’en débarrasser par la suite.
