Premier témoignage live de Queen avec Adam Lambert au chant, ce Live Around the World a été capturé sur l'ensemble des tournées mondiales effectuées par la fructueuse association entre 2014 et 2020. L'occasion rêvée pour découvrir ou redécouvrir en situation le « phénomène Lambert », celui qui, à seulement 29 ans, a osé marcher dans les chaussures d'un des plus grands chanteurs et showmen des 50 dernières années : Freddie Mercury. On imagine sans peine le casse-tête qu'a dû constituer le choix des titres à retenir sur cet enregistrement, mais le mix habile de tubes incontournables et de pièces plus rares parvient à éviter avec brio le piège du simple et réducteur best of joué en public. Mieux : Roger Taylor, Brian May et Adam Lambert vont jusqu'à pousser l'hommage à feu Mercury en piochant deux titres dans son répertoire solo (le très touchant Love Kills - The Ballad et I Was Born to Love You). Partant probablement du sage postulat que son illustre prédécesseur est inimitable, Lambert lui est fidèle sans jamais chercher à le singer et il semble évident à la lumière de certains des titres ici présents (Somebody to Love est un exemple évident) que bien peu d'artistes auraient pu s'acquitter de cette tâche avec autant de talent. Parmi de nombreuses satisfactions, il convient de souligner une excellente version du cultissime Under Pressure sur laquelle le duo originel Mercury/Bowie devient un échange Lambert/Taylor très réussi. De même, une interprétation musclée du heavy Now I'm Here permet de vérifier qu'à plus de 70 ans, le binôme fondateur de la Reine fait toujours parler la poudre avec autant de puissance (quel batteur sous-estimé que ce Roger Taylor !). Puisqu'il est aujourd'hui acquis que Queen et Lambert n'écriront pas ensemble de nouveau matériel studio et se concentreront sur la restitution scénique de ce gigantesque héritage musical, profitons de ces rétrospectives sans arrière-pensée. Live Around the World est une réussite, doublée du meilleur contre-argument à servir aux fâcheux qui auraient souhaité que le groupe ne survive pas à son leader, sous quelque forme que ce soit. © Charlélie Arnaud/Qobuz
