Premier album studio pour Paul McCartney en quatre ans, Kisses On The Bottom est une collection de standards du jazz vocal, une première dans la discographie du chanteur britannique. McCartney, dont le père était à la tête d'un orchestre dans les années 1920 a sans nul doute été bercé par ces chansons et cet évident lien de parenté entre le chanteur et ces classiques place cet exercice un peu plus haut que la multitude de projets similaires lancés par des artistes de la même génération. Produit par Tommy LiPuma, l'album bénéficie de l'intervention d'une large palette d'invités parmi lesquels Eric Clapton, Stevie Wonder et Diana Krall. Quant au titre de l'album, il trouve son inspiration dans l'introductif "I'm Gonna Sit Right Down (and Write Myself a Letter" de Fats Waller.
