Succédant à To Pimp a Butterfly (2015) et untitled unmastered. (2016), issu des mêmes sessions, DAMN., publié en 2017, continue d'imposer le rappeur californien Kendrick Lamar comme un acteur incontournable de la scène hip hop mondiale. Persistant à affiner son écriture et insistant dans ses introspections, Lamar y semble plus préoccupé par le contenu que le contenant, l'écrin musical, s'il reste de premier choix, s'avérant bien éloigné des ambitions de son prédécesseur. Pour autant, les sonorités restent variées, la trap music du MC intégrant synth funk éthéré, accents indie rock et R&B pour un résultat volant bien au dessus de la mêlée. Porté par le single "DNA.", DAMN. prouve si besoin était encore l'implication de son auteur dans son art et sa détermination à tracer sa propre route.
