Ses Six suites pour violoncelle seul, Jean-Sébastien Bach les a voulues comme un exercice d'une grande diversité et une confrontation intime entre l'oeuvre et le soliste. Il n'est donc pas étonnant que beaucoup de ceux qui s'y sont frottés trop tôt y ont laissé des plumes. Oeuvre incontournable du répertoire de tout violoncelliste, le corpus BWV 1007-1012 a trouvé quelques interprètes suffisamment sages pour ne l'enregistrer qu'en pleine maturité de leur art. Est-ce nécessaire de rappeler les versions légendaires de Pablo Casals, Pierre Fournier ou de Paul Tortelier et celles plus modernes d'Anner Bylsma, Mstislav Rostropovitch ou de Yo-Yo Ma ?
La deuxième interprétation de Janos Starker, réalisée en 1963 et publiée par Mercury en 1966, fait assurément partie du podium de tête de ces interprétations. Après une première tentative précoce en 1957 (à 33 ans), le violoncelliste hongrois remet son savoir sur l'ouvrage et trouve la clé de l'oeuvre à travers un ascétisme à toute épreuve. Sans se soucier de faire briller la polyphonie des six partitions, il préfère en creuser l'intériorité et tracer une épure qui peut être rebutante à première écoute. Cependant, c'est bien là que réside la puissance hypnotique de ces Suites, c'est à cette austérité que l'on revient après s'être lassé de la virtuosité mal placée et autres fioritures gratuites.
La prise de son, en totale adéquation de l'interprétation dans cette atmosphère « sèche » et robuste, ne fait que renforcer cette sensation de profondeur mystique qui se dégage de ces danses (à la base allemande, courante, sarabande et gigue) composées entre 1720 et 1725. Les Suites n°1 BWV 1007, n°5 BWV 1011 et n°6 BWV 12 profitent pleinement de cette interprétation au sommet, entre celles de Casals et de Fournier. Janos Starker réenregistrera ces Suites pour violoncelle seul pour la troisième fois en 1983. Cette version RCA tardive, à ne pas confondre, manque de magie et de force interieure pour rivaliser avec cette version Mercury où l'inspiration rejoint l'esprit originel de la création.
