Alors que tout semblait indiquer la fin de Roxy Music après les déconvenues critiques et commerciales de Manifest (1979) et Flesh + Blood (1980), particulièrement sévères avec le recul, la vénérable institution britannique relève enfin la tête en 1982 sur Avalon, huitième album studio marqué non pas par un retour aux sources mais au contraire par une option esthétique forte, offrant à la voix de crooner suave de Bryan Ferry un écrin lustré et élégant traversé de nappes de synthétiseurs, de grooves subtils et de guitares limpides. Montant sur le trône du mouvement new romantic du moment aux côtés d'ABC ou Japan avec l'aide des classiques cristallines "Avalon" et "More Than This", Avalon constitue le mémorable chant du cygne d'une institution à l'influence indéniable sur plusieurs courants musicaux.
