Dans les années 1970, Herbert von Karajan atteint l'apogée de sa popularité et devient le chef d'orchestre le plus médiatisé de l'histoire. En faisant filmer ses performances, il assure une belle place à sa postérité. La légende veut qu'il ait déjà donné le meilleur de lui-même dans les années 1950 et 1960 mais qu'en est-il réellement ? Les 82 disques que compte ce coffret exhaustif de ses enregistrements des années 1970 pour Deutsche Grammophon rétablit-il ce jugement ?

Ce qui est acquis est que le chef salzbourgeois diversifie considérablement son répertoire à cette époque. Celui-ci couvre désormais les périodes baroque, classique et contemporaine et, à l'instar de ses confrères, s'aventure davantage vers des compositeurs trop négligés par le passé (Mahler, Berg, Schoenberg). Pour autant, le coffret s'encombre de documents superflus tels les Hymnes et Marches prussiennes et autrichiennes d'un autre temps. Ceci considéré, il possède l'avantage de réunir les cycles indispensables des symphonies de Beethoven, Brahms et Tchaïkovsky et ceux, moins réussis, de Mendelssohn et de Schumann.

Au rayon des incontournables, il faut noter les enregistrements réalisés avec sa protégée, la violoniste Anne-Sophie Mutter, dans les Concertos pour violon de Mozart (N°3 & 5 sur le CD 55) et de Beethoven (CD 74) et le rare Concerto pour piano de Tchaïkovsky avec Lazar Berman (CD 43). Le cycle des Symphonies de Bruckner, inachevé (Symphonies n°4 à 9, CD 38-39, 42, 49-50, 63 et 78) est aussi un must de sa production et reste inégalable, tout comme le Te Deum qui bénéficie d'une distribution de rêve (CD 46 avec Anna Tomowa-Sintow, Agnes Baltsa et José Van Dam). Il en est de même du cas Mahler constitué des Symphonies n°4, 5, 6 & 9 et de trois cycles de lieder avec Christa Ludwig. Pour tous ces éléments, auxquels il faut ajouter ses interprétations majestueuses de Bach (Concertos brandebourgeois, Messe en si mineur et Passion Saint-Matthieu) et les Requiem de Mozart, Brahms et Verdi, ce coffret remplit parfaitement sa mission de présenter un large éventail d'oeuvres dans un style inégalé. D'autres pièces moins amples mais très intéressantes de Borodine, Offenbach, Weber ou Orff viennent compléter un programme comportant peu de « déchets ». Cerise sur le gâteau, chaque disque est présenté avec sa pochette et les couplages originaux. Un guide de 200 pages annoté par les plumes les plus pertinentes (Richard Osborne, Peter Uehling, Klaus Stoll) achève de faire de Karajan 1970s un coffret de référence.

Chronique

Dans les années 1970, Herbert von Karajan atteint l'apogée de sa popularité et devient le chef d'orchestre le plus médiatisé de l'histoire. En faisant filmer ses performances, il assure une belle place à sa postérité. La légende veut qu'il ait déjà donné le meilleur de lui-même dans les années 1950 et 1960 mais qu'en est-il réellement ? Les 82 disques que compte ce coffret exhaustif de ses enregistrements des années 1970 pour Deutsche Grammophon rétablit-il ce jugement ?

Ce qui est acquis est que le chef salzbourgeois diversifie considérablement son répertoire à cette époque. Celui-ci couvre désormais les périodes baroque, classique et contemporaine et, à l'instar de ses confrères, s'aventure davantage vers des compositeurs trop négligés par le passé (Mahler, Berg, Schoenberg). Pour autant, le coffret s'encombre de documents superflus tels les Hymnes et Marches prussiennes et autrichiennes d'un autre temps. Ceci considéré, il possède l'avantage de réunir les cycles indispensables des symphonies de Beethoven, Brahms et Tchaïkovsky et ceux, moins réussis, de Mendelssohn et de Schumann.

Au rayon des incontournables, il faut noter les enregistrements réalisés avec sa protégée, la violoniste Anne-Sophie Mutter, dans les Concertos pour violon de Mozart (N°3 & 5 sur le CD 55) et de Beethoven (CD 74) et le rare Concerto pour piano de Tchaïkovsky avec Lazar Berman (CD 43). Le cycle des Symphonies de Bruckner, inachevé (Symphonies n°4 à 9, CD 38-39, 42, 49-50, 63 et 78) est aussi un must de sa production et reste inégalable, tout comme le Te Deum qui bénéficie d'une distribution de rêve (CD 46 avec Anna Tomowa-Sintow, Agnes Baltsa et José Van Dam). Il en est de même du cas Mahler constitué des Symphonies n°4, 5, 6 & 9 et de trois cycles de lieder avec Christa Ludwig. Pour tous ces éléments, auxquels il faut ajouter ses interprétations majestueuses de Bach (Concertos brandebourgeois, Messe en si mineur et Passion Saint-Matthieu) et les Requiem de Mozart, Brahms et Verdi, ce coffret remplit parfaitement sa mission de présenter un large éventail d'oeuvres dans un style inégalé. D'autres pièces moins amples mais très intéressantes de Borodine, Offenbach, Weber ou Orff viennent compléter un programme comportant peu de « déchets ». Cerise sur le gâteau, chaque disque est présenté avec sa pochette et les couplages originaux. Un guide de 200 pages annoté par les plumes les plus pertinentes (Richard Osborne, Peter Uehling, Klaus Stoll) achève de faire de Karajan 1970s un coffret de référence.
