Difficile de rester insensible à cette célébrissime version de Cavalleria Rusticana enregistrée dans les années 1960 par un Karajan au commet de son art avec les plus grands artistes d’une époque bénie par les dieux du grand art lyrique. Karajan dirige Mascagni d’une telle manière qu’il le fait passer pour un génie comme Mozart ou Verdi. Sous sa baguette, l’Orchestre de la Scala de Milan sonne avec une opulence quasi berlinoise et un art du legato moelleux. On admirera une fois de plus la beauté du timbre de Carlo Bergonzi, son délicieux accent parmesan et, surtout, l’intensité à la fois tragique, poétique et pleine de feu qu’il donne au personnage de Turridu. Sa personnalité et sa voix radieuse laisse ses partenaires loin derrière, malgré la présence volcanique et la voix énorme de Fiorenza Cossotto. La qualité sonore fait partie intégrante du plaisir éprouvé à chaque nouvelle audition de ce enregistrement archi-connu et multi-célébré grâce à une technique stéréophonique quasi parfaite dans la balance des voix et de l’orchestre. Un tel « classique du disque » ne peut pas vieillir.

Inséparable de son jumeau Cavalleria Rusticana de Mascagni, le drame de Leoncavallo trouve dans ce fameux enregistrement, réalisé en 1965 à la Scala de Milan, une interprétation qui, pour avoir marqué plusieurs générations, s’écoute aujourd’hui encore avec admiration et respect. Tout d’abord grâce à l’extraordinaire incarnation de Carlo Bergonzi donnant au rôle de Canio l’image d’une humanité bafouée, d’une intense émotion.
On ne peut écouter son grand air « Vesti la giubba » sans frémir et sans avoir pitié de cet homme blessé qui doit pourtant faire le clown (« pagliaccio » en italien) malgré sa douleur. C’est la démonstration moderne du thème de Diderot sur le sort du comédien qui fait rire tout en pleurant sa triste réalité sous son masque : « Ridi, Pagliaccio ! » (« Ris, Paillasse de ton amour brisé ! »). Karajan est ici au sommet de son art et fait sonner l’Orchestre de la Scala en technicolor, magnifié par une prise de son typique des années 1960 qui réalise une balance quasi idéale entre le chœur, les chanteurs et l’orchestre. Karajan donne une intensité presque wagnérienne au célèbre Intermezzo orchestral précédant le dénouement d’un drame encore exacerbé par l’intense soleil de la Calabre.

Descriptif de l'album

Difficile de rester insensible à cette célébrissime version de Cavalleria Rusticana enregistrée dans les années 1960 par un Karajan au commet de son art avec les plus grands artistes d’une époque bénie par les dieux du grand art lyrique. Karajan dirige Mascagni d’une telle manière qu’il le fait passer pour un génie comme Mozart ou Verdi. Sous sa baguette, l’Orchestre de la Scala de Milan sonne avec une opulence quasi berlinoise et un art du legato moelleux. On admirera une fois de plus la beauté du timbre de Carlo Bergonzi, son délicieux accent parmesan et, surtout, l’intensité à la fois tragique, poétique et pleine de feu qu’il donne au personnage de Turridu. Sa personnalité et sa voix radieuse laisse ses partenaires loin derrière, malgré la présence volcanique et la voix énorme de Fiorenza Cossotto. La qualité sonore fait partie intégrante du plaisir éprouvé à chaque nouvelle audition de ce enregistrement archi-connu et multi-célébré grâce à une technique stéréophonique quasi parfaite dans la balance des voix et de l’orchestre. Un tel « classique du disque » ne peut pas vieillir.

Inséparable de son jumeau Cavalleria Rusticana de Mascagni, le drame de Leoncavallo trouve dans ce fameux enregistrement, réalisé en 1965 à la Scala de Milan, une interprétation qui, pour avoir marqué plusieurs générations, s’écoute aujourd’hui encore avec admiration et respect. Tout d’abord grâce à l’extraordinaire incarnation de Carlo Bergonzi donnant au rôle de Canio l’image d’une humanité bafouée, d’une intense émotion.
On ne peut écouter son grand air « Vesti la giubba » sans frémir et sans avoir pitié de cet homme blessé qui doit pourtant faire le clown (« pagliaccio » en italien) malgré sa douleur. C’est la démonstration moderne du thème de Diderot sur le sort du comédien qui fait rire tout en pleurant sa triste réalité sous son masque : « Ridi, Pagliaccio ! » (« Ris, Paillasse de ton amour brisé ! »). Karajan est ici au sommet de son art et fait sonner l’Orchestre de la Scala en technicolor, magnifié par une prise de son typique des années 1960 qui réalise une balance quasi idéale entre le chœur, les chanteurs et l’orchestre. Karajan donne une intensité presque wagnérienne au célèbre Intermezzo orchestral précédant le dénouement d’un drame encore exacerbé par l’intense soleil de la Calabre.

Trente ans après sa mort, l’Autrichien Herbert von Karajan (Salzbourg 1908 - Anif 1989) incarne toujours la figure du chef d’orchestre.
