Paul Horn
A classically trained flutist who later emerged as a jazz musician and environmentalist, Horn in recent years has labeled his material "universal" music. He's recorded sounds made by killer whales, and taught transcendental meditation. His soothing, very lyrical flute reflects his best playing and flute is his finest instrument, though he's also a competent tenor saxophonist. Horn's most jazz-oriented work was done earlier in his career, and he's done more chamber, New Age/ambient and mood material in recent years than improvisational fare. He started on piano at age four and began playing saxophone at 12. Horn studied flute at Oberlin College Conservatory and earned his bachelor's degree there, and a master's at Manhattan School of Music, both in the early '50s. He joined The Sauter-Finegan Orchestra as a tenor saxophone soloist. Horn played in Chico Hamilton's group in the late '50s, then moved into studio work in Hollywood. He won two Grammy awards for his "Jazz Suite on the Mass Texts" in 1965 serving as principal soloist in Lalo Schifrin's band. Horn also played with Tony Bennett in 1966, but after becoming dissatisfied with commercial music and the Hollywood lifestyle departed America for India in 1967. He studied transcendental meditation with Maharishi Mahesh Yogi (also the Beatles' guru) and later became a TM teacher. While in India, Horn recorded unaccompanied flute solos in the Taj Mahal at Agra, exploiting the building's famous acoustic properties that provided reverberation time of almost 30 seconds. This album was one of the cornerstones of the then embryonic New Age music movement. Horn later recorded in the Great Pyramid of Egypt and in the cathedrals of the former Soviet Union. He collaborated with musicians from China, India and the Middle East. Horn moved to an island near Victoria, British Columbia in 1970 and formed his own quintet. He also had a weekly television show and wrote film scores for the Canadian national Film Board, who gave him an award for his music to "Island Eden." He began his own label in 1981 and has continued performing into the '90s. Horn's recorded as a leader for Epic, RCA, Ovation, Island, Rare Bid, Prestige, Lost Lake Arts, Black Sun, Kuckuck and his own Golden Flute label. He has many sessions available as a leader.
