Karl Seglem

Norway's Karl Seglem is an eclectic, stylistically wide-ranging saxophonist, composer, and producer. Although primarily a jazz musician, Seglem has a deep passion for Norwegian folk music, and often uses it as a jumping-off point for his compositions. Born in Årdalstangen, Norway, in 1961, Seglem received formal music training at Voss Folk High School. After school, he found work performing with such artists as vibraphonist Arvid Genius, pianist Knut Kristiansen, guitarist/poet Kenneth Sivertsen, and others. As a solo artist, Seglem debuted with Poems for Trio (1988), followed by Sogn-A-Song (1991), Rit (1994), Spir (1998), and Tya - Frå Bor Til Bytes (1999). Since the 2000s, he has released a steady stream of highly acclaimed albums -- including New North (2004), Urbs (2007), and Ossicles (2010) -- that found him blending traditional Norwegian instruments such as the Hardanger fiddle and bukkehorn (ram's horn) with contemporary composition, improvisation, and electronics. In 2014, Seglem released the album Som Spor, which featured a composition he was commissioned to write for the 2012 Vossa Jazz international music festival.
