Joya Marleen

Switzerland's Joya Marleen made an unexpected ascent to the top of the country's national airplay charts with the punchy, dark-hued single "Nightmare." Just 18 at the time, her smartly crafted pop songwriting and confident delivery belied her young age and set the table for additional songs like "Driver" and "Softly Speaking," both of which appeared on her self-titled 2021 EP. Born April 28, 2003, in the city of St. Gallen, Marleen learned to play the guitar and began writing her own songs at the age of 12. Her talent developed quickly, and within a few years she started performing a blend of jazzy, acoustic pop inspired by heroes like Tracy Chapman and Swiss musician Sophie Hunger. By 2018, she'd begun racking up significant live credits around the country, though it was her 2020 debut single that garnered mainstream attention. Shifting away from her acoustic origins, "Nightmare" was an edgy pop track with a strong hook that climbed all the way to number one on Switzerland's airplay chart. Marleen followed it up later that year with the moody piano ballad "It's Been a While." 2021 brought more new songs like the sleek, rhythmic "Drive," which was included on her eponymous EP.
