Haley Blais

Vancouver singer/songwriter Haley Blais plays a confessional strain of indie rock that has been referred to as nostalgia pop. After her breakout 2018 single "Small Foreign Faction," Blais made her full-length debut with 2020's Below the Salt. She continued to explore a mix of dreamy, dark-hued pop and textured rock on the 2023 follow-up Wisecrack. Raised in Kelowna, British Columbia, Blais received classical vocal training in her youth and was in a touring opera troupe during her teenage years. She also played guitar and later began writing her own songs, taking influences from icons like Bob Dylan as well as contemporary Canadian indie artists like Andy Shauf. In the mid-2010s, after moving to Vancouver, Blais began building an online audience as a vlogger, documenting her life and posting covers on her channel. She released a debut EP, Late Bloomer, in 2016, but it was 2018's Let Yourself Go and its breakout song "Small Foreign Faction" that earned her a larger fan base. Her moody production and mix of breathy dream pop, textured indie rock, and introspective lyrics caught the attention of Vancouver label and management company Tiny Kingdom, which released her debut album, Below the Salt, in 2020. Co-produced by American indie pop duo Tennis and Canadian artist Louise Burns, it was a critical success and helped Blais earn a deal with the more prominent Toronto label Arts + Crafts. On her 2023 sophomore album, Wisecrack, Blais set a darker tone, exploring themes like morality, conscience, and existential anxieties.
