Ann Gray
Calgary-based bagpipe player Ann Gray originally hailed from Nova Scotia, which proved an excellent place to learn the Great Highland Bagpipe, her instrument of choice. Gray also played the smallpipes, whistles, mandolin and bodhran on her own solo recordings as well as performing with the Celtic folk band, Seanachie. She has won many prestigious prizes for her bagpipe playing, including the Dunvegan Gold Medal in 1995. Gray's solo albums stay fairly close to the Scottish folk tradition while still allowing for some creative innovation. Her debut album was A Twist in the Tale and she followed up with Shouting At Magpies, which was issued in 1999 by the KRL label.
