Shervin Hajipour

In September 2022, Iranian singer Shervin Hajipour (Persian: شروین حاجی‌پور) added his voice to the anti-government demonstrations sweeping Iran with his powerful protest song "Baraye," inspired by the tragic death of Mahsa Amini and the surrounding feelings of injustice awoken in so many. He was arrested on 29 September 2022, two days after the song made itself known, and was released on bail on 4 October 2022. Shervin Hajipour was born on 30 March 1997 in Babol, the capital of Babol County, and began playing the violin as a child before setting his sights on becoming a professional composer. He made a beeline for music while studying at the University of Mazandaran, composing for theatre performances and editing, and soon turned his attention to singing. He took part in Iranian talent competition New Era, making it to the finals of the second round of the first season, but his presence was deemed troublesome by the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting. In 2022, he showed his unwavering support for the women of Iran's protest movement with his revolutionary anthem, "Baraye," based on the vital slogan "Women, Life, Freedom."The song was taken off social media at the command of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps's security agents, with the Tasnim News Agency uploading an edited version of the video clip, with images showing the Islamic republic's achievements rather than the original empowering ones. He was arrested but released on bail on 4 October 2022, and many people have taken to social media to nominate "Baraye" to the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences in the new Grammy Awards category, Best Song for Social Change.
