Evidently provided to Vee Jay Records as part of the Four Seasons' settlement for ending their contract with the label, Live on Stage is a bizarre and contradictory album. For starters, it isn't a live recording at all, but a series of studio performances with audience noises dubbed on (and done with surprising degree of care for this era). Additionally, and much more oddly, it contains not a single hit -- the usual procedure with a fake live album such as this being to manufacture "concert" versions of charting singles -- probably as a result of the group not wanting to give Vee Jay Records any further access to their best material in any form whatsoever; indeed, there's not an identifiable Frankie Valli falsetto lead anywhere on it. And, finally, for all of those drawbacks, and most strangely of all, Live on Stage is still worth hearing, at least once, by any fan of the group. The group creates a "performance" of a program of standards that include "Blues in the Night" and "Mack the Knife" in a style that was deliberately archaic (and closer to the early work of the Four Lovers than to the Four Seasons); these are broken up by the presence of one new song in the group's contemporary style that actually did get a single release, "Little Boy (In Grown Up Clothes)." And one track, "How Do You Make a Hit Song," featuring excerpts from "Sherry," seems to have been inspired, in part, by a vaguely similar track off the Beach Boys Concert album in which that group explains how their sound is put together. This isn't a high-priority item for any collection, but it is fun and it does offer the group doing a range of songs in good voice (albeit in an offbeat style) that are unavailable elsewhere, as well as yet another airing of both "My Mother's Eyes" and "Come Si Bella." It is also among the rarest official long-players by the group, having been released only weeks before Vee Jay Records ceased to function as an active label.
